The lengths to which CH'ers are willing to go.....

......a little back story on the inspiration for this post first.

I met a clusterhead who owns a farm and garden store near us for the first time on the phone about 3 1/2 years ago when we still lived in Dallas.  My wifes ex had walked into his store while he was getting hit and found him huffin O2.....Mike has seen me get hit on numerous occasions so he immediately knew what the hell was goin on!

He also knew about my involvement with CB and our treatment method......so he sez, "You got cluster headaches don't ya"?  So he gives the guy my number and tells him, "Call Denny, he's got some stuff that'll fix that shit for ya!!  So I get the call, gave him the scoop. and offered to help.....he just wasn't willing to go to those lengths.....I fully understand!!  The first time I landed on the old CB site (before this version of the board was up and running), I read about it, laughed about it, and forgot about it!! My exact words to my wife were, "Its a bunch of damned old hippies tryin to justify getting high!!

When we purchased our property here in okieland 3 years ago, I stopped in at his store to pick u some stuff, introduced myself, and we talked for awhile about CH...still wasn't willing to go to those lengths....

I usually buy at the big box stores like Lowes and the Depot but last Saturday I stopped in to pick up a couple saw chains and in the  course of our conversation, I asked him how his head was treatin him.

His response was, "Its been fine since I started using this herbal concoction I picked up while on vacation 2 years ago"!  My first thought was, "Oh shit, this dude done went to the BVI's and stumbled on to the Bomba Shack"! LOL!!  He was actually in the Dominican Republic and this is where the plot commences to thicken folks!!!

While he was there, he got hit and some black dude sitting close by asked if he had a headache and then recommended this concoction as a treatment!!  So the guy took him to this shop and he bought a bottle of it....a squat shaped 750 ml bottle ( think recycled rum bottle), stuffed full of twigs, bark, and dried herbs....and NO, they would not disclose the ingredients!!!

Now its time to make the brew (this is gonna make most of ya'll cringe at the thought)....in a medium sized drinking glass, add 2 fingers of honey followed by 3 fingers of RED WINE!!!  Stir until the honey has dissolved, stick a funnel in your bottle and pour it over yer sticks and twigs....THEN.....fill the bottle the rest of the way up with light RUM!!!!!  Let it steep for a few days and them pour it out and start over (they told him the first steep would taste too bad too drink!)....anyway....fill the bottle back up again, let it steep, and then proceed to take 1 shot daily...when ya run out, just fill the bottle back up again....this guy is still using the same bottle from 2 years ago!!

Now for a little bit of his history...

....Clusters for 15 years and he's a rightie

....although he doesn't fit the "classic chronic" definition, his cycles would last 6 months followed by 1 to 2 month remission and then another 6 months of hits for the whole 15 years....that would damned sure be chronic to me!!!!

....and he sez alcohol was NOT a trigger for him.

And his results.....he had 3 hits the first 6 months he was drinkin this concoction and has been completely PF the last 18 months!!!!!

I hope Ricardo and some of our other knowledgeable herbalist minded members will address the possibility of this concoction in some way changing the alcohol content and rendering it to be a non trigger??

Well, guess I can't put it off any longer......the name of said concoction.......Mama Juana!!!

When I googled the name, there was plenty of info on it but I could find nothing that would indicate that it would help clusters.....but I can tell you this for SURE....this dude is one happy camper and he wouldn't miss a daily shot of what ever the hell he's takin for the world!!!!

Mama Juana is a mixture of bark and herbs left to soak in rum (most often dark rum but the use of white rum is not uncommon), red wine and honey. The solid ingredients (local leaves, sticks and roots) vary from region to region but usually include some of the following:

Anamú (Petiveria alliacea)

Anis Estrellado (Illicium verum)

Bohuco Pega Palo (Cissus verticillata)

Albahaca (Ocimum basilicum)

Canelilla (Cinnamodendron ekmanii)

Bojuco Caro (Princess Vine)

Marabeli (Securidaca virgata)

Clavo Dulce (Whole Clove)

Maguey (Agave spp.) leaves

Timacle (Chiococca alba)

According to a book I have Petiveria alliacea is used by the Shipibo-Conibo as an ayahuasca additive.  They say it has "hallucinogenic properties" and esteem it as a "master teacher of the healing arts"  Supposedly the active constituents are nineteen different coumarins, isoarboriol, triathiolan, and trithiolaniacine.

And no, I do not have any idea what the hell any of that does :)

Illicium Verum is Star Anise.  Reputed to have enzyme inducing  properties that can make some drugs stronger.  This could be a helpful ingredient to get the rest of the stuff doing something.

The Bohuco Pega Palo (Cissus verticillata) has androgenic properties.  Possibly boosting testosterone, Whatever it is doing it sounds like a pretty effective herbal viagra.  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2641584/

Albahaca (Ocimum basilicum) is basil.  Some repute it's essential oil to be psychoactive.  Debatable. Although I will say, that the few people that have said it is psychoactive say that you have to take it with other things that induce or inhibit different enzymes.  Maybe this mixture makes basil psychoactive.

Cloves have a reputation as being a pontentiator of psychedelics and possibly psychoactive on their own.

The Maguey is an agave whose juice is typically fermented kind of like tequila.  I can not find any info on properties of the leaves.

I can't really find much for info on Canelilla (Cinnamodendron ekmanii), Bojuco Caro (Princess Vine), Marabeli (Securidaca virgata), or the Timacle (Chiococca alba).

From what I have read, "mamajuana" is a little bit different everywhere you go, (and the fact that these folks did not want to disclose the ingredients points to the idea that they have something special in it) so it might be hard to replicate this guys results without going to the same source.  BUT...all in all this stuff looks like it would do SOMETHING to you :)

As far as the alcohol not being a trigger...Do you know for sure that this guy reacts to that much alcohol?  I know I can take a little but not a lot.  Otherwise it does seem kinda weird, and point to something working pretty damn good and pretty damn fast.  Not impossible, but I'm skeptical.

Well this is kinda exciting to have a whole new thang under investigation, thanks to DD, Didgens and CHf.

Ricardo, the herb specific info and bit of healthy skepticism are also appreciated. I know I'll be following this, (and whether there will be a work around for the alcohol content) with real interest.

It also makes me wonder whether there is a reasonable way to evaporate the alcohol out of concoctions such as this...?

I'll be following this, and whether there will be a work around for the alcohol content, with real interest.

There is a way.  If you take the concoction and double boil it you will evaporate most of the alcohol out.  If you really wanted to make sure the alcohol is out I would double boil it until it is thick and hardly has any liquid left.  You can always add water or glycerine back to it afterwords.  You want to double boil it as opposed to just boil it so that you are not damaging active drugs that might be sensitive to heat.  I would try the lowest boil you can, if you have the time to wait for it to be done.

I am not completely convinced that it will help though.  Red wine is a big trigger for people with migraines I would not doubt if it's the same with clusters.  Whether it is the tannins, the sulfites or some unknown something made in fermentation is not known, but it sure seems like it is NOT the alcohol.  Migrainers that get hit by red wine often times do not with other alcoholic products.  by doing a double boil method you will get rid of the alcohol but not much else.  I am beginning to think the same with me.  It seems like fermented wines, meads and other naturally fermented drinks are more likely to set me off than hard alcohol like Tequila.

Glad to see your comments on this thread everyone.....have been hoping that you would add your expertise to the discussion Ricardo so was happy to see your posts this mornin!!

I will try to get by the farm store this next week an visit (grill) this dude again!!  Lol!

Didgens... He did tell me that he had found the same stuff (bottle and label anyway) on eBay...forgot to include that info in my initial post... Sorry bout that!

The alcohol thingy has me very skeptical as well ya'll....so, I'll definitely question him further about it being a trigger......but I have to  :-[believe that it somehow helped this guy!!  I'm going to also ask questions about CH diagnosis and what treatments he used in the past other than O2 therapy....I would think the fact that he knew O2 worked would indicate he had a doc with CH knowledge?

If anyone else can think of other questions I should ask, please list them here.

I mixed my first batch of mama juana last night, it's a a bag of sticks and herds, it smells like spice, my dog was all over it, I used honey, red wine, bacardi, watched a you tube on how to mix it and winged it, my friend works at the liquor and we had a good laugh about mama jauna, so if this stuff is bunk.. it was worth it for the laugh, 7 days from now i'll pour it out and add honey and rum again, then 5 more days and cheers

You just know that at one point someone who has had it up to here and then some with the beast is going to go double nuclear on him and wash down their vitamin M (or paper) with heaping guzzle loads of the Mama Juana.  :D

I'm not suggesting anyone take this double whammy approach (well not yet anyway), I'm just imagining that it could be inevitable that someone will give it a shot (and hopefully report back).  ;D

I have a bottle of the 'ol Mama J on order from that Ebay link BTW. 8-)

I've bought the Mama Juana mix.  Too interesting not to :)

My plan is to soak it in some organic grape alcohol that I use for tinctures.  Then I think I'll evaporate half the alcohol out of it (it's 190 proof :) ), add some grape juice and honey.

Interested to see what this stuff does to me.

IÂ’ve been on Mamajuana for 5 days now, an hour after the  first shot no pain, and later no night time hits. I take a 1oz shot of mamajuana mixed with OJ in the morning and afternoon. I did not throw out the first batch, seemed like a waste of good herds. It has a bitter taste. There's a change going on in my head, no pain, not words I normally use. A little bit about me, I'm chronic going on 6 years, get hits during the day, every day, at 7 pm its gets more intense. I use D3, O2, seeds, no vitamin m and alcohol is a trigger for me. I was worried about alcohol being a key ingredient in mamajuana. But, so far it has not been an issue, wtf is all I can say. This juice is taming the beast. ItÂ’s taken the ice pick sharp pain and flattened it out, very dull, almost nothing. Also, I do not feel a buzz or high from the juice, I seem to have a lot more energy.

I bought my mamajuana from this ebay link,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MAMAJUANA-Don-Ramon-6-OZ-POLYBAG-REFILLS-750ml-BOTTLE-/2...

I mixed 2 fingers of honey, three fingers of red wine, top it off with Bacardi rum and poured into a bottle with mama juauna, and waited 7 days.  Thanks, Denny
