Panu
Try magnesium - you may get surprise. I did.

Bejeeber
I remember seeing a couple of those links about magnesium sulfate IV for CH back during an episode in '97. When I saw this "Complete elimination of pain was observed in 80% of the patients within 15 minutes of infusion of MgSO4" I immediately talked a doctor into giving me one of those infusions. Didn't do jack for me - in fact I had a major attack on the way home from the doc office. Of course YMMV. There's a piping fresh new form of magnesium that some MIT nerds cooked up that they claim is the only one shown to cross the blood brain barrier. I have no idea whether it is actually worth looking into or not, but here's a link: http://www.swansonvitamins.com/health-library/products/magnesium-l-threonate-brain-function-mental-health-support.html
Panu
It was not injection. I've had the beast for over 30 years typically once a year and ~6 weeks. During this time I've several times thought to find a permanent relief; last time it was taurine. Anyway after three week I started to take magnesium tabs, which you may buy also from normal stores (at least in Finland). Cost is also ridiculous. Why? I had read that the pain is due muscle cramps in brain. My wife had recommended to take mg due to occasional muscle cramps in my legs. So I thought what the heck. Since the first day of starting it it was all gone. Of course this could be coincidence again or psychological, but I don't care as the pain's gone. That's enough for me. I've also found other positive effects in addition to brain and legs. After gym I used to get soar muscles the next day even after proper stretching. That's also gone. So hurray MG. Bejeeber
Hey Panu, Yes I too find that magnesium goes a long way towards preventing leg cramps. I've read that leg cramps are often caused by a magnesium deficiency, but this is the first I've heard about CH being caused by brain cramps! Panu
That was told by my neurologist already ~25 years ago when he diagnosed it: These musles are around blood vessels in the head and they copmpress the vessels causing lack of oxygen and thus headache I assumed this is why also oxygen inhaleing helps by increasing the oxygen content in the blood. Also different relaxants and stuff like LSD or some others make the muscles relax. This is my theory and like said it was quite long ago and I may have misunderstood or remember it incorrectly. Anyway at least this time the pain disappeared and that's what matters to me.
tripod
How much magnesium did you take daily? I happened to start magnesiumoxide today, prescribed by my specialist in internal medicine (what's that called in english??), for stomach problems, but i am also hoping it might do something for my head. I have to take 1000mg 3x a day. Btw: so far no luck with the head.

ETA: Actually, Ron is right if it's a stomach doctor, and not one who just does internal medicine. We have internists here who deal with lots of problems, and Gastroenterologists who deal specifically with stomach problems.
Bonkers
Might be a Gastroenterologist.
Panu
Only 375 mg / day which is a typical size of one pill of standard additional nutrition - so no real medicine. Like said, it could be a coincidence that it all dissapeared the day after I started to take them. Anyway my clusters have always (~once / year, > 30 y => lot of experience...) lasted 6...8 weeks and they've always behaved like gauss-curve => starting slowly and reaching the heights in the middle and then slowly fading away. Now it stopped after 3 weeks at the top of the curve. I don't have any other explanation. What I also noticed is that the tense in the face and sculp (left side) I normally have during and before the clusters disappeared. This all I've had now over 5 weeks since it went away. And not to forget the other minor things as well; the rest of the positive effects.
