Busting & melatonin

I am trying melatonin as we speak.  I read a study from JAMA that stated there was a link with unstable melatonin levels in CH patients in their study group.  Speaking for myself, this makes sense, because my sleep cycle has always been erratic, even as a child. I just can not get to sleep unless i am totally exhausted ( after 2-3 days of sleeping in increments of 10-15 minutes).  I only started taking it 2 days ago.  The beast is still hanging on though, going on 3 weeks now.  HUGS and pain free days to everyone!  On a good note... my greedy pants insurance company FINALLY approved my triptiphan injections!! woohoo! on my way to pick them up now! :o

Fabac, just in case you haven't run across this info tidbit, CH dosage of melatonin before bed is higher than ordinary dosage just for sleep.

A common approach is to start at 9 mg, and work all the way up to 18 or even 21 mg if necessary.

On the triptan injections end, I hope you'll be deploying lower (but still highly effective) doses a la the "extending your imitrex" tip:

Got my o2, took your advice and did the welding tank and ordered the demand valve from ebay...got some other delivery equipment "donated" by the ER doc at the hospital I am employed with.  Appreciate the melatonin dosage advice.  I started with the 9 mg..I will bump it up tonight.  Wish this thing would leave for a bit so I can give the MM a try.

Just a note about melatonin, with apologies for maybe overcomplicating this topic.  It's not very "bio-available" (doesn't get into your system very quickly or very thoroughly).  Some have had good success with a chewable brand (available at Trader Joe's, among other places) that comes in very small dosages (like .5 mg); I think others will say the time-release version is also good.  So there are a lot of variables in kind and dosage.

Also -- While some people have good results with melatonin (which, as you say, stands to reason given melatonin depletion observed in CH patients), a few others have found that it seems to make their CH worse.  (I'd say -- though I could be very wrong about this -- that for a lot of people there's no difference. But they might not be pushing the levels as high as might help.)  These things are so tricky to get specific about because there are so many other factors.  Just sayin' -- if you feel like things get worse, it could be the melatonin.
