I'm one of the lucky ones to suffer both CH and Migraines although the latter only a handful of times a year and often knocked on the head (pardon the pun) with Ketamine.
My wife and daughter have both had some really promising results using Lion's Mane for unrelated health problems which got me doing some research. Human studies are limited but animal studies have shown definite neurological benefits, and it seems undeniable that there are scientifically proven reasons why it helps humans. From Pubmed:
The active chemicals in Lion's Mane that stimulate the body's natural neural repair mechanisms are hericenones and erinacines. Rather than replacing our internal repair signals, these small-molecule compounds act as triggers that boost the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), which are the proteins responsible for growing and repairing brain cells.
When I read stuff like that I often wonder if they might help CH at all. In this case I found plenty of anecdotal evidence that Lion's Mane has helped migraine sufferers so thought I'd give it a go. Very mixed results on 1500mg daily dose :
Day 1 - an unusual amount of energy throughout, how I remember coffee affecting me before middle age took its toll. I put this down to placebo effect but it was certainly a strong effect.
Day 2 - woke up with a normal headache which isn't unusual. Took the daily capsule and began to feel energised once again, to a surprising degree. However by lunchtime I was in bed with a medium level migraine which cleared by the evening after 2 doses of K. Read online that LM increases bloodflow to the brain, so can increase pressure.
Day 3 - woke with a horrendous migraine and decided to stop the Lion's Mane as this is not normal migraine behaviour for me.
A week later I've bought some gelatin capsules and have divided the doses into thirds, going to see if I can build a tolerance. Took one third dose this morning and found myself rabbiting to work colleagues as if I had just IV'd the strongest coffee imaginable. Remains to be seen if this dose causes another migraine...
This compound really does seem to have some stimulating effects which is promising in that it actually does seem to do 'something'. My wife has also said it improved her tiredness and concetration, and it has markedly reduced my daughter's anxiety issues.
Anyone else have any Lion's Mane experiences to share? I wonder if anyone has used it to 'cure' their migraines like the stories I have seen online?
