Murderer, I am

Some of you know me.  I am not a violent person and as I am used to violence, I abore it.

For the last 2 months, as living in the Northern Territory in Australia, we have had cyclone warnings, a lot of wind and massive amounts of rain.  With this comes the cane toads.  You can read up on this as a pest introduced to Australia.

I do not like killing anything, not even an ant if I can help it, but for the cycle of life I cannot allow these creatures to flourish.  Besides milking them for CH purposes that leaves them often dead, I have some pythons(harmless snakes that get rid of vermin), a dog, bird life (Kookaburras, hawks and the like), tree frogs and kangaroos on the property.  When they get in touch with these cane toads, they most often get poisoned and die.

As I am very conscious of the circle of life and the environment, I do not use pesticides, live of rain water and do everything organically.  But I had to kill a cane toad by brute force tonight.  I hated it, but other animals will live on this huge island.

I am sorry.

Yeah I hate the killin' too. Ever since I had to kill a mortally wounded really big field mouse to prevent it from crawling away and "escaping" to suffer a lingering death when sprung from a rat trap, I said no more mouse/rat traps, no more animal killing for me.

And man that is obviously such teeny teeny little small potatoes in the killing dept., just as your toad was. Plus you really didn't have a choice - you had to protect your pets and native animals.

In some cultures you apologize to the animal's soul - I've apologized to that mouse's many times - and I often give that a go with bugs too, although no apologies from me to mosquitoes!  :D

Meantime I suggest you re-focus on the critters you've just saved, celebrating the positive life forms you have preserved there, by running around the house 3 times shouting "I've got Kookaburas!!, I've got Kookaburas!!" at the top of your lungs ;D, kind of like "I'm cuckoo for cocoa puffs!, I'm cuckoo for cocoa puffs!" (apologies if you didn't have the Cocoa Puffs breakfast cereal commercial there that I'm referencing).

I would love to have Kookaburas (and KANGAROOS!) here, and would certainly want to protect them.  :) Sorry you're faced with that tuff choice/tuff cane toad situation there.

Practically the same story for me.  But I haven't taken it to the ethical place you have, Jeebs, regarding vegetarianism.  So for me, it's more like no more in-person killing of animals.

Jazz,

Don't be too hard on yourself.  Something will make good use of the frog you dispatched.  I'm in the process of transitioning to a vegitarian / vegan lifestyle as well.  In the killing department I have to agree with the mosquitos and add one to the list, spiders and on occasion roaches, though I usually try to take them outside when given the opportunity.  I've had 2 spider bites since moving to FL and both were somewhat painfull and gross...  (though hardly ever see any spiders since moving 2 years ago).
