Imigran Injections Discontinued?

Hi Everyone, 

I get a cluster cycle once a year which lasts for about 4-8 weeks! I count myself lucky not to be chronic. Over the past 20 odd years, I have managed to get through these cycles with O2 as well as the odd Imigran Injection. These were especially helpful if I had to travel overseas. 

Now for the past two years, I have not been able to get any Imigran Injections in South-Africa. First I was told that the manufacturing was moved to a new plant which required new import permits into SA. The last communication I received from GSK (Glaxo Smith Klein) was the following: "Unfortunately GSK has discontinued the Imigran Injection. This discontinuation will affect not only South Africa but other countries as well."

Anyone aware of this or have any news on this?

I believe imigran is sumatriptan which is Imitrex in the US.  There have been sporadic shortages of the drug  (likely created shortages to push newer CGRP meds (me being cynical)).  I'd look for generic sumatriptan

...if you are using the 6 pack vials their supply is sporadic vs the stat dose if available at all..

 

...as an alternative the 5 mg nasal spray Zomig formerly from Astra Zeneca...now Amneal worked as well for me with lesser side effects

And/or . . . see if you can get sumatriptan in vials, and syringes, so you can self-measure.  The 6mg in the autoinjector is way more than you need--2mg or 3mg is all that's needed.  There's also the 3mg Zembrace (in the US) injectable sumatriptan.

Thanks, it seems as if the demand locally for even the generic is so low that it is just not viable for them to sell it in SA. I have been put in contact with a non-profit company that sources medicine on behalf of clients not commercially available. Will give them a go. I will forward them the suggestion given. Appreciate the advice.

Hi, did anyone find any Imigran injections? My dad is really struggling with clusters and that's all that helps. We are in Namibia.

Hi @Sumari, sorry I don't know the availability status of imigran injections.

If your dad has any left, and if they are 6 mg, he can actually get 3 aborts, instead of just one, from one syringe, with the extending imitex tip successfully used by legions of clusterheads for a good couple decades now.

I imagine it is the only prescription medicine that has helped so far, but non-pharmaceutical approaches have been found to be more effective, with high success rates, as seen at the blue New Users - Please Read Here First banner at the top of the page ^^^^.

Also if 100% oxygen at a high flow rate is at all available, it is a non-toxic abortive that can be an effective replacement for imigran in most instances.

I can't imagine that anyone here will be able to help you find Imigran in Namibia, but maybe I'm wrong.  If you do get them, be sure that you/your dad split them so he gets more use from them: Getting partial doses from sumatriptan injectors (Imitrex, Imigran, etc.) - ClusterBuster Files - ClusterBusters

Oxygen is very effective at stopping attacks.  Can you get that?  Could you set up a system using welding oxygen?  Notes about welding O2 - ClusterBuster Files - ClusterBusters

DMT has been found to be a very effective abortive.  Do you have any chance of getting (or making) that?  DMT experiences and advice - Theory & Implementation - ClusterBusters

Hi

The injections have been discontinued in South Africa for some time now. I'm in Durban. 

However, what I found personally is that those injections, whilst it does abort the attack, it brings on a series of follow up attacks.

I would suggest that you read through the vitamin D3 Regimen. 

Since I had been introduced to this magical treatment by fellow sufferers, it has really working so well for me. It does take some time to start working, however, once you are a month or so in it, it works wonders at giving you years of remission. Well that's what I found. You just have to be patient with beginning and once you in the game, you will be rewarded greatly. 

It is easy to lose hope whilst beginning. I did. But I gave it my all and I am pain free going on 6 years now. 

Whilst doing this regimen you will still get attacks at first, however, kill those attacks with O2 and maybe some OTC pain meds for the after pain on that side. 

Look for the D3 Regimen on this site. You won't go wrong. 

During these past 6 years, yes "he" did appear once, however I was guided to increase the D3 dosage for a few weeks and it phased off. Always keep O2 on hand. Always.

Make sure to check your D3 levels regularly. 

When I started, mine was sitting at 18. Explained my brutal attacks and frequent cycles.

I managed to bring it up over 80 with loading doses of D3 along with the rest of the vitamins within a matter of 6 weeks. I am so glad this is working so well for me. 

Maybe consider or read up on it.
